Sita Sings the Blues:

May 3, 2010 by

So, this movie is amazingly stunning!  It was done on tablet . . . flash I believe?  The artist utilizes four differing styles to convey three different stories.  One very sketchy, mixed media collage like style when commenting on her own life, a very traditional style reminiscent of the Hindu Vedas, traditional cartooning for musical numbers, and shadow puppets for narrators and commentary.  Its completely free to watch it in full online in multiple forms, for multiple OS’s.  She also has a link for products she sells to help pay off the debt she accumulated in the making of the film.

Monsters: Sequencial Narrative Project Schedule

March 29, 2010 by

Visiting Lecturer: LORI NIX
Wednesday, 3-6PM class will be meeting at 3-4pm in Wollman Hall, (65 W. 11 Street, 5th Floor).

A landscape photographer at heart, Lori Nix has been building and photographing complex dioramas in her Brooklyn, New York apartment for nearly a decade. Begun in 2005, “The City” series painstakingly recreates miniatures of architectural spaces to reveal an unsettling world where not all is what it seems. The cycle of nature is referenced as wild animals and vegetation gradually reclaim the buildings once dedicated to history and science. With Nix’s foreboding sense of humor always in full force, the work brings into focus the ever-constant dilemma of humanity’s catastrophes repeating themselves and how the end of civilization can ironically reflect the beginning.

Lori Nix was born in Norton, Kansas. She earned her MFA in Photography from Ohio University and her BFA in Photography and Ceramics from Truman State University. Her work has been shown nationally with exhibitions by ClampArt Gallery, New  York, NY, Jenkins Johnson Gallery, New York, NY, The George EastmaPMn House, G. Gibson Gallery in Seattle, WA, Miller Block Gallery, Boston, MA, the California Museum of Photography, and Stephen Cohen Gallery in Los Angeles, CA. She as been awarded grants by the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Ohio Arts Council. A fine-art and editorial photographer based in Brooklyn, Nix’s client list includes New York Magazine, Oprah “O” Magazine, and Glamour UK.

Monster Stories

March 29, 2010 by

Frankenstein is a remarkable book for its insights into human nature and human needs, especially as they are felt and amplified in the form of a gigantic creature from outside humanity, yet made up–quite literally–of the shards of humanity. The novel touches several powerful themes: love and hate (together with their transformative powers), beauty and ugliness (together with their prejudicial effects), innocence and guilt (whether real or imagined), compassion and hard-heartedness.

Building a Culture of Scholarship: Reflexive Professional Practice, Critical
Academic Research, and Creative Scholarship

Please join us for the next in the series of  Brown bags Tuesday March 23rd 10.30 to 12 noon in the Kellen Auditorium, 66 Fifth Ave. Shari Diamond will present.

Shari is interested in the narrative, symbolic and poetic possibilities of imagery and has explored the potential of photographing from unusual points of view, combining multiple images on a single surface in a darkroom and most recently juxtaposing and layering images digitally.   Her current project “Resistance in Two Parts,” is a collaboration with writer Honor Lassalle  The project uses the events of the Holocaust, when Muslims hid Jews in Paris, as a central paradigm to investigate the range of what resistance can be and what we can learn from it.

Shari Diamond teaches in Foundation and is a photographic artist who lives and works in Brooklyn NY.  She is a recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts 2008 Fellowship in Photography and received two grants for community photography projects from The Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by the Brooklyn Arts Council.  Her work has been shown in numerous galleries, including Friedrich Petzel Gallery, PS 122 Gallery, Art Projects International, A.I.R. Gallery, Pulse Art, 494 Gallery and the Alternative Museum.

In 2010-11 academic year, the School of Design Strategies is continuing its ambitious project of mapping out the existing full-time faculty scholarship, unearthing productive relations, and charting directions for future work. In
an obvious attempt at sharing our ideas about research, involve our colleagues in collaborative projects, foster a culture of collegiality and exchange, we would like to continue to build a culture of support aimed primarily at making sure that our faculty have increased chances of attracting (internal and external) funding as well as of adequate assessment and successful promotion
